3D laser scanning for systems BWT (Ballast Water Treatment)

The IMO (International Maritime Organization) developed and adopted the “International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water, Ballast Water and Sediment Ships, 2004” (Ballast Water Management Convention) with the aim of protecting the marine environment of the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by ships.
Scanphase collaborates with naval companies and field specialists and offers high quality services for shipping companies to comply with the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM) in across European ports (Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, ...) and Spanish ports (Valencia, Algeciras, Barcelona, Las Palmas, Bilbao, Santander, Tarragona, El Ferrol, Huelva, Cartagena, Avilés ...) as well as those in North Africa.

Laser Scanning of Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS)

The BWM (Ballast Water Management) Convention entered into force on September 8, 2017 and according to it, all ships in international traffic must manage their ballast water and sediments according to a certain standard, in accordance with a management plan for specific ballast water for the ship. Boats must install a ballast water treatment system on board.

Typically, the ballast water treatment system goes into the engine room or pump room of a ship. The installation of a new and large system to a functioning ship involves a great deal of time and effort because of the complicated piping systems and machinery already present. The traditional method of creating detailed drawings requires manual measurements to replicate the actual site layout. Any remodeling to accommodate the new system will have to be done based on these manually-produced drawings. This entails numerous on-site inspections of the ship, and enormous amounts of design time. In addition, limitations that come with manual measurements mean that a slight error on paper could amplify to become a much larger design fault during execution.

Scanphase offers an extremely fast measurement process and offers an accurate 3D scan of the network pumps and pipes critical to the BWTS (Ballast Water Treatment system) so that engineers can:

  • Agree on an efficient ballast water management plan

  • Accurately implement the BWTS plan

  • Engineers can easily navigate the installation process of the Ballast Water Treatment System.

  • The 3D scan data allows for the creation and maintenance of exhaustive records pertaining to the designated area, providing valuable insights for monitoring, future modifications, and compliance adherence..

Laser Scanning of Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS)

Once the laser scanner captures the data points in the target area, the accompanying software processes and builds complete 3D models with the data. The new ballast water treatment system  BWTS and its piping system can be seamlessly planned and integrated with the affected structures. The ability to plan ahead, based on accurate 3D models, allows you to create an optimal design and account for lead time for crucial elements such as detailed structural designs, production materials, and engineering drawings. In addition, it is easier to get an idea of the overall design after installation of the BWTS (Ballast Water Treatment System) and identify potential problems. This would be difficult to tackle with the traditional 2D model.

The efficiency gains facilitated by laser scanning lead to a notable reduction in project duration. Subsequently, time and effort can be allocated towards meticulous system installation. The design, production, and installation of accessories benefit from streamlined management, ensuring precise orchestration and, ultimately, the timely completion of each project.

To get jobs done in a short amount of time, it is imperative that shipping companies look for ways to cut down on working hours, while controlling a faultless installation. To that end, laser scanning technology is the most effective means of capturing large volumes of data in a short period of time for the construction of accurate 3D models. This may be the most efficient and promising solution to the imminent challenge of producing countless water ballast treatment systems BWTS to meet the needs of the shipping industry for years to come.

The use of laser scanning in shipbuilding is a technology that helps shipyards deliver projects faster, more efficiently, and with less risk.

The pivotal factor for gaining a competitive edge lies in the swift, precise, and cost-effective 3D capture of vessels while they are "in operation". This early acquisition of detailed and accurate 3D studies from laser scan data empowers shipyards to proactively plan projects, devise refurbishment designs, and efficiently procure materials, enabling prompt initiation of work as soon as the ship docks for repair. Utilizing scanning technology effectively curtails downtime, amplifying operational efficiency within the maritime domain.

We are a company that specializes in quickly and accurately capturing current conditions, using the latest proven technologies in laser scanning and precision lifting, to achieve best practices for boat repair and new construction.
